An AI-native firm: the difference is structural, not cosmetic.

Picture a traditional firm. At the centre are the lawyers. Everything else - the document management system, the practice management software, the subscriptions to research tools, and yes, their AI tools, sit around them as ancillary kit. The humans are the hub and the technology plugs into the humans.

An AI-native firm flips that. The AI system becomes the core, and the humans become the outer crust. By outer crust I mean something specific: nothing comes into the firm or goes out of it except through a human. Every piece of client work is driven, checked and signed off by a qualified solicitor. That part is non-negotiable and it never changes. It's important to us that our clients have an incredibly human-first experience when they work with us.

But underneath that human layer, the firm runs on a single centralised system rather than a patchwork of disconnected tools. Every interaction, every document, every email, every matter, flows through one place. It's tracked, tagged and synthesised. Agents with different roles operate across all of it rather than each lawyer working in their own silo with their own files.

First, context compounds. In a traditional firm, knowledge lives in individual lawyers' heads and scattered folders. When work is centralised, the firm can actually know what it knows, about a client, about a matter type, about what worked last time. Nothing gets lost between people or systems and we constantly get faster and better with every interaction.

Second, it changes what the humans spend their time on. When the mechanical work is absorbed by the core, the human layer is freed to do the part that actually requires a lawyer: judgement, strategy, knowing where the risks are, understanding what the client is really trying to do (more on this in future posts).
